I BELIEVE WE CAN FLY!!!!!
Every day has literally been a discovery when I come
to my office at the church building. Just today, as I am writing to you Geri, our secretary, Denise, our Learning Center Director, and Evelyn who is a teacher in the learning center and also does custodial work at church are all sitting at my desk becoming the proud parents of five fragile and fresh cocoons! The idea to hatch a butterfly occurred to me as a fun project for our children’s moments in worship during the season of Lent because, well, butterflies are a beautiful and powerful symbol of resurrection. I ordered the ‘butterfly kit’ online and just a couple days latter Geri called me and said, “Um, there are bugs in the mail!” The butterflies-in-training came in a self-contained plastic cup with a lid on it which, the directions assured, was full of everything that our new dependents required to make the miraculous transformation from creepy crawling critter to winged Painted Lady butterflies. So, the reason we have all gathered at my desk today is that a big right-of-passage in our butterfly experiment has arrived today. The caterpillars have all gone inside of their chrysalides there to work the magic, out of site and safely guarded from all elements, which will make them fly! If I sound like I am getting excited I am. Also, I don’t mind admitting, I am more than a little nervous because I have never been a papa to five little would-be-butterflies before. At this stage they need to be spritzed with a mist of water each day, not too much and not too little, to keep them from drying out. In seven to ten days, the butterfly instruction manual says, baby butterflies should be emerging from the perch where today I have hung them inside of their mesh habitat and stretching their fledgling wings. Then, I anticipate – if all goes well – I will have five

colorful little toddler butterflies to be responsible for keeping alive until Easter when I hope to invite everyone in worship to go forth from the service and release our fully grown progeny into the wild. Pretty dramatic, huh? One thing that nurturing cocoons has taught me already is that some driving force beyond what I am doing for my little friends, and beyond what they are capable of doing for themselves has been at work at every step of this journey to let them know it is time now to hang upside down, time now to spin, time now to hibernate, time now to wait patiently for the transition to occur, time now to spread your wings and take flight. This is a powerful analogy of new life to me because I believe it replicates exactly the way that God gives new birth into my life and your life: resurrection hope is not a flash-in-the-pan but, rather, a process which God is guiding every step of the way. I look forward to greeting you in church this Lenten/Easter time. Maybe you will get to see the birth of a butterfly too when you come to church! I pray that also you will experience the presence of this powerful, ever-present God who is working a plan for the miracle of new birth in your life. Love, Pastor Scott
